Piano Readings
Peter composes original music, for you, based on time he spends getting to know you.
A Piano Reading is a deeply personal, one-of-a-kind musical experience. Peter composes an original, improvised piece of music for one person at a time, inspired entirely by time spent listening, sensing, and connecting.
After decades of performing for large audiences — from churches and jazz festivals to Carnegie Hall and stadiums of tens of thousands — Peter has discovered that the work he finds most meaningful now happens in the most intimate setting possible: playing for a single human being.
Each Piano Reading begins with a 20–30 minute conversation, either in person at Peter’s home or via Skype or FaceTime. Together, they explore what is present in the listener’s life — what’s alive, what’s challenging, what’s unfolding in the heart and mind. At a certain point, a clear musical doorway appears: a specific chord, harmonic landscape, melody, and emotional tone that becomes the beginning of the piece.
Once that starting point reveals itself, the music begins.
If the session is in person, the listener may lie beneath the piano, immersed in sound and vibration. For remote sessions, the camera is placed directly on the keyboard, creating an intimate visual and sonic connection. Peter improvises for approximately 8–12 minutes, allowing the music to unfold organically — responsive, intuitive, and entirely unique to the person receiving it.
Each Piano Reading is professionally recorded, just as Peter records his albums, and delivered afterward as a high-quality MP3 or Hi-Res WAV file — a personal piece of music that can be returned to again and again.
This is a profoundly intimate and empathic process. Peter is highly sensitive to the presence and energy of each individual, and the music changes completely depending on who he is playing for. In fact, his Grammy-winning album Dancing on Water is drawn from a collection of these personal readings, later shaped into shorter compositions.
Piano Readings are equally powerful in person or via Skype and FaceTime.
Peter considers this work an honor — a shared moment of presence, listening, and creation.
The fee is $600 per session, whether in person or remote. Sliding scale options — and, in some cases, complimentary sessions — are available for those facing serious health or emotional challenges.
